Semaphore terpanjang

Sekitar 5.000 anggota pramuka memecahkan rekor MURI untuk Parade Semaphore Terpanjang. Atraksi ini dilakukan dalam acara Perkemahan Pramuka Santri Nusantara di Sumedang, Jawa Barat. Panjang barisan parade ini mencapai 2 KM.
Atraksi semaphore terpanjang ini dilakukan oleh anggota pramuka berbagai golongan dari seluruh Indonesia. Barisan ini berjalan ke tempat perkemahan sambil bersemaphore dengan menyanyikan lagu-lagu nasional.

Pendaki Puncak tertinggi

Tim Ekspedisi Tunas Indonesia telah berhasil mencapai puncak Gunung McKinley, Alaska Amerika Serikat. Mereka mengibarkan bendera Merah Putih dan bendera Pramuka. Namun sayang, Pungkas Tri Baruno, ( Anggota pendaki ) itu tewas dalam perjalanan pulang. Atas prestasinya, Kwartir Nasional menganugerahkan penghargaan Lencana Darma Bakti. Lencana dan diserahkan oleh Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Semoga semangat mereka menjadi obor dan keteladanan bagi Pramuka Indonesia..

Tunas kelapa terbesar

Adalah Karya terbaik dari Anggota Pramuka Gugusdepan 02.001 – 02.002 yang berpangkalan di SD Jatingaleh 1,2 dan 3 Semarang. Meraka boleh berbangga, atas penghargaan yang diterimanya dari MURI dengan pemecahan rekor Tunas Kelapa terbesar se Indonesia. Tunas Kelapa yang terbuat dari sabut kelapa itu diselesaikan dalam waktu 39 hari, dengan tenaga pengerjaan dari para Pembina dan anggota Pramuka di sekolah tersebut, dibantu oleh para anggota Arhanud , Semarang Tunas Kelapa terbesar ini dengan ukuran: Panjang : 7,5 m, Lebar : 4,25 m, Diameter : 3,25 m.

Kacu pramuka terbesar yang pernah dibuat mencapai panjang alas 45 meter, tinggi 22,5 meter, dan sisi miring 32 meter, Setangan leher/ dasi Pramuka ini dibuat oleh Para Peserta Jambore Santri se Indonesia.

Penyuluhan Narkoba dengan Peserta Terbanyak

Prestasi ini dilaksanakan dalam rangka memperingati Hari Pramuka ke-47, Pemda Provinsi Kepulauan Riau, Kwarda Kepulauan dan Kalakhar berhasil menyelenggarakan kegiatan penyuluhan Akbar Bahaya Penyalahgunaan Narkotika dan Pencegah Narkoba Kepada Anggota Pramuka se Provinsi Riau yang diikuti 10.235 peserta. Kegiatan dilakukan di Riau pada tanggal 14 Agustus 2008.

ASEAN SCOUT JAMBOREE 2008

18-26 October 2008, Jakarta, Indonesia

Motto "One Spirit, One Promise, One South-east Asian Land" Theme "Developing brotherhood and cultural understanding" Sub Theme "Brotherhood toward peace and prosperous South-East Asian Community"

The Activities

The camp will be filled with various activities. Besides Scouting activities, other activities of the camp consist of cultural exchange, environmental awareness and community development. Those activities are meant to enhance the understanding among ASEAN Scouts that they come from one root and one region, thus together they will work to develop the region to become a well-developed and peaceful area. The cultural exchange module activity consists of cultural performances of the contingents and interactive activities to give other contingents a chance to taste and to understand the cultural concept of other participating countries. In line with the spirit of enhancing and strengthening brotherhood and understanding among the ASEAN Scouts, in most of the activities, the participants will participate as ASEAN patrol.

Age Range
The activities are designed for the youth aged 13 to 16 years. The reason behind it is that the youth of that age already have an understanding about their country, thus are ready to learn more about their responsibility to their country as well as their region.

International Service Team
For Scouters above the age of 18 are possible to join this Jamboree as members of the International Service Team

The Organization
In fostering togetherness and brotherhood among NSOs in ASEAN countries, the camp will be jointly organized by all NSOs from ASEAN countries. Thus every NSOs will give a contribution in making the activity a success. In the preparation time the NSOs will be involved as members of Steering Committee, while during the event they will be involved as members of the Jamboree Service Team.

Camp Fee
US150/participant covering program and transport, campsite and facilities, food and catering, participant pack, sub camp facilities, staff and administration, limited medical care.

The Venue

The camp will be located in Cibubur Camping Ground Jakarta.

Participants

The participants are Scouts from NSOs in ASEAN countries, namely; Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Related information: The first ASEAN Jamboree, held in January 1994 gathered 14,790 Scouts and Scouters from the ASEAN countries and nine national Scout organizations from other parts of the world was held in Mt. Makiling in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines.

Dizzy Basketball

Required: Basketballs, basketball hoop and baseball bats
Players: Small to medium groups

Divide up players into teams. Give each team one basketball and one baseball bat. One player at a time from each team will go to their baseball bat, bend over, put their head on the end bat and circle it 5 times while in this position (They should be vary dizzy at this point). Then they will go pick up their basketball dribble down to the hoop and shoot a basket with the ball. Once they have done this they return the ball to it’s position by the bat and tag the next player on the team to do the same. The first team done completing this rotation is the winner.

Cracker Whistle

Required: Crackers, table or counter, cups and water
Players: Small to large groups

Set up 2-4 teams depending on the number of players. The first player on each team will run to one main table, eat two crackers and then attempt to whistle. Once a player has whistled they run back to their team and tag the next player. That player will also do the same until everyone has completed the task. The first team done is a winner. Make sure you have cups of water nearby just in case someone needs a drink.

Required: 8-10 paper or plastic cups and plates,

Set up teams of 8-10 players in lines facing away from the middle of a circle about 15-20 feet away. In the middle of the circle, somewhat lined up with each teams position, is their pile of cups and plates to stack up.
Each team will be given one ball. The first player from each team will run down to the middle where their equipment is, and stack the plates and cups alternating them, having the cups face down, and then run to the next person to do the same. The next person will run down and un-stack them and then re-stack them. But anyone from another team has the option of using their ball to try to knock down any other team's stacked pile to set them behind. This is done only by the next person in line, on their turn, they cannot go do their task until the person behind them has retrieved the thrown ball and brought it back to the group. If a team's cups are knocked down, the person that stacked them has to return and do it again. So the strategy becomes do you knock down someone else's stack or focus only on your team's progress and play it safe. The first team done is the winner of the game.

Chimp Race

Players: Small to large groups

Set up teams and play area. The first person on each team is to bend over with feet apart and grab their ankles. On “go”, they are to race down the course and back without letting go of their ankles. Each person on the team repeats the relay. The first team done is the winner.

Bucket Brigade

Required: 2 water bottles per team and small
(bathroom size) paper cups
Players: Small to large groups

Divide into teams of 5 to 10 players. Each team will be given two water bottles, one full and the other empty. Each player will receive one cup. The teams line up front to back in a row sitting on the floor. The person in front will hold the full water bottle and the last person on the team will have the empty water bottle. On go, the first person in line will pour water into his cup and then without turning pour his cup of water into the cup of the player behind him. Each player will pour his cup of water into the cup of the next player. The last player will then pour his cup of water into the water bottle. As soon as the first player passes his water he can refill the cup and start passing again. They will continue until all the water is out of the first bottle. The team with the most water in the bottle at the back of the line is the winner.

Blinded Ball Retrieval

Required: Containers, balls and blindfolds
Players: Small to large groups

Separate into teams of 4-8 players and each team will have one container of balls and one blindfold. Each container will have to same amount of balls about 3-5 depending on the size of the teams. The container of balls will be placed about six feet in front of the teams. The first player will put on the blindfold and then the balls will be dumped out. Each player will try to retrieve 3 balls and place them back into their own container by following instructions given by the rest of the team. Once they have done this they can remove their blindfold and return to the next person in line. That person will put on the blindfold and the balls will be dumped. They will also retrieve 3 balls for their container. The balls can be any balls that they find but they have to go into their own container. If they put a ball into the wrong container it will count for the other team. Caution the players not to run because they can bump into the other players that are blindfolded. It’s best if only one person from the team tells the blindfolded player where to go. It will take teamwork trying to keep quiet so that the player can listen for direction. The first team done with the rotation is the winner.

Blanket Carry

Required: One blanket for each team, cones
Players: Medium to large groups

Play this game in an open grassy area. Divide the group into teams of 10 players. Each team will be given one blanket. Set out one cone per team at the end the playing field for players to go around. Each team will need four players to carry the blanket; one player on each corner and the corners will be numbered corner #1, #2, #3 and #4. They will also need one player to ride in the blanket. The players will rotate after each carry so that each player on the team has been at all of the corner positions and the carried player. On go, the teams will race down around the cones and back then rotate until all players have had a turn. If one team is short on players that team will have to repeat some players so that all teams take the equal amount of trips down and back. The first team to complete the rotation is the winner.

Big Foot

Required: Large rubber boots and grass play area
Players: Small to large groups

Set up teams with each team assigned one pair of large rubber boots. These boots can be fishing waders and it would be helpful if the players could just slide their shoes right into the boots without taking off their shoes. Have teams line up behind the starting line. The first person on each team must put on the rubber boots, race down grass course and back, take off the boots and the next person on the team will do the same. When the last person on one of the teams crosses back through the starting line first, they are the winners.

Beanbag Bowling

Required: 5 bowling pins and 5 bean bags
Players: Medium to large groups

Play on a smooth flat surface like a gym floor. Divide players into four teams. Place one bowling pin exactly in the center of a 30ft - 40ft circle. The other four pins will be placed evenly around the outside of the circle. One player from each team will be on the outside of the circle standing next to their bowling pin but slightly behind it. The player is given a FlingSock or beanbag to hold onto while they run. When signaled the players are to run around the outside of the circle in a clockwise direction. Once they make a complete circle they are to stand at their bowling pin, toss their bag so that it will slide across the floor in an attempt to knock down the bowling pin. If their bag misses they are to retrieve their bag and return to their throwing position and try again until someone knocks down the pin. The team that knocks down the pin receives 5 points. The next players on each team will do the same until all players have had a chance to do the relay. The team with the most points is the winner.

Banana Olympics
Required: Bananas
Players: Small to large groups

Divide the group into teams of 8-10 players and give each team a banana. Each team will complete several series of different relays using their banana. Here are some ideas for those relays.
1. The banana under your armpit and hopping on one leg down a field and back.
2. Place the banana between the knees and hop down a field and back.
3. Two teammates tossing the banana back and forth down the field and back.
4. Place the banana on the ground and each teammate must roll across the banana.
5. Teammates line up in leapfrog formation and first player hops over players while holding banana and then tosses banana to next player in line to do the same.
Show the players all the relays that they’ll have to complete for the Olympics. You may have to write them on a large white board so that all players will know what relay is next. Once a team has completed all these relays someone on the team must eat the banana and the team that is done first is the winner. Use your own ideas, add to the list or use only a few ideas. You can adjust this game to all types of players including the disabled.

Balloon Head Race

Required: Balloons
Players: Small to large groups

Organize players so that they’re into pairs and each team receives a partially inflated balloon. When the game starts, teams must race to a finish line carrying a balloon between their heads, remember don’t use your hands. On hot days try it with water balloons or through a sprinkler. You can even try an obstacle course.

Ball Relay

Required: 15 sets of balls in various sizes, two ball bags and two hula-hoops
Players: Small to large groups

This game is great for a physical education teacher. Set up players in two teams. You will need 15 balls for each team. The balls for each team should match in size. You should use medicine balls, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, kick balls, volleyballs, etc. Each team should have the same size and amount. In front of each team, place a hula-hoop filled with all their balls, the big ones should be on the bottom with the little ones on top. All the balls should fit inside the hoop. At the other end of the field will be a ball bag for each team (big enough to hold all the balls for that team). The first person from each team is to grab a ball, take it down the field, stuff it in the bag, race back and tag the next person who will do the same. You keep doing this until the last ball is left. The person with the last ball will take it down field, stuff it in the bag, bring the bag back to the front of the line where the hoop is and place all the balls back into the hoop. Once all the balls are out of the bag and placed in the hoop that team wins, but the trick is they have to be stacked correctly to fit into the hoop. The big ones must be on the bottom and the little ones on top.

Back Seat Driver

Required: Several big wheels or tricycles, blindfolds, and orange construction cones
Players: Small to large groups

Set up teams so that each team has a small bike to ride, a blindfold and a course with 3 -5 cones ahead of them equally spaced. If you don’t have access to cones then make them out of milk jugs filled with sand or water. You can paint them differently for each team. The first player from each team will mount his bike and put on a blindfold, the next player of the team will be the back seat driver. The back seat driver will direct the driver down through the cones weaving in and out, and then back to the start line. The back seat driver will now become the driver and the next person will be the back seat driver. The old driver will go to the back of the line until he becomes the last back seat driver. The first team to complete the rotation is the winner. A great team building game which youth or young couples will enjoy.

Baby Care Relay

Required: Baby dolls, baby clothes, diapers, powder, small tub or dish pan, peanut butter, water and towel
Players: Small to medium groups

Try to come up with life size baby dolls to play this game. Each team will have close to the same size baby and the same items to dress their baby. Items to dress the baby for each team might be booties, t-shirt, diapers, a bonnet or cap and one-piece outfit. To add some excitement you can even put a scoop of peanut butter in each diaper and make sure each team has several diapers for diaper changes. You could even throw in a few diapers with pea soup for an added surprise. To start the game, have the babies dressed and across the room on a table. The first person on each team will undress baby, if the baby had a bowel movement remove with a diaper wipe and place baby in the tub. They return to the team and the next person will dry off baby, power and diaper bottom, dress baby and pat once on bottom to ensure the BM (bowel movement) connects to baby. The next person will remove clothes; wipe bottom and place in tub. The first team to finish rotation will be the winners.

This game is a great youth group game, great game for a child development class and for a baby shower. Discuss the do’s and don’ts about taking care of a baby after this game. One of them is never leave a child alone in a tub and baby powder is not used by many parents because it’s not good for babies to inhale.

Magic Carpet

Required: Shower curtains from the dollar store
Players: Small to large groups

Set up teams of 8 to 12 players. Each team will be given one shower curtain as a magic carpet and all team members will be standing on it. You start out the game by telling teams the following:
You are on a magic carpet, up in the sky. You’ve discovered that you’re not going anywhere because your carpet is upside down. The object is to flip the carpet back upright without anyone stepping off into the abyss. You may use your hands. The team that reverses its carpet first without anyone stepping off is the winner.

Ice Bowling

Required: Winter weather with icy play area or indoor ice rink, one galloon plastic milk jug, 10 plastic 2 liter pop bottles and food coloring
Players: Small groups

Fill all plastic bottles and milk jug with colored water, and freeze. Clear off snow on an icy play area about 10 feet by 4 feet and then set up the ten bottles at one end. The bottles should be set up in a pyramid, 4 in the back, then 3, then 2, and then 1 in front. Players will take turns trying to knock down the bottles with two sliding throws of the milk jug. One or two players should be placed a few feet behind the targets to return a sliding throw back to players, without knocking down targets. You can even play this game while on ice skates.

Head Catch

Required: Disposable plastic bowl, elastic, glue and
Fun Gripper Bean Bag Set or Fun Gripper Juggle Set
Players: Small to medium groups

Purchase some disposable plastic cereal bowls at the store. Take two bowls and carefully hot glue the two bottoms together or you can use other reliable glue that will quickly dry permanently. Measure out elastic band so that it will keep the bowl attached to the top of someone's head. Attach the elastic by stapling or poking small holes and tying it off. If for a party you can decorate these hats ahead of time with the theme. You can use stickers, permanent markers or paint that will stick to plastic.

To play with these newly made items you can do several variations.

One game you can play is a relay game. Each team receives a bowl hat and the first person puts on the hat and stands about 3 feet away from the next person in line. The second person in line throws whatever soft objects you have chosen in the air, to attempt to get one into the bowl hat. Once they accomplish that, the throwing person moves up to the catching spot and the next person is the thrower. The catcher moves to the back of the line. You rotate until the first catcher is throwing and has accomplished that task. The first team done is the winner. You can mark off throwing and catching lines so that all players move to the correct locations.

To use this game idea for a birthday party, you can make it so that everyone gets a hat. Have them decorate their own hat then give each player a soft item to try and catch. The first person to make a catch is the winner. You can then keep playing the game individually with 3 to 5 catches and they win. Or you can have them in pairs where one is the thrower and one is the catcher. Then they can switch sides after the task is accomplished. The first pair to sink two shots wins.

Guess That Smell

Required: Cotton Balls, Empty Film Tubes with lids, and different liquid extracts
Players: Small to large groups

Place one cotton ball in each empty film tube and poke a hole through the lid of each tube so you can easily smell the scent inside. For each cotton ball choose one scent to be added to the cotton ball. You can place numbered tags on the bottom of the tubes that correspond with a master list. Here are some ideas of scents to add to cotton balls, lemon, peppermint, vanilla, garlic, orange, bacon, cherry and coffee. The person that correctly identifies the most scents is the winner.

Flyer Golf

Required: Flyers, play area, ribbon markers,
score cards and pencils
Players: Small to medium groups

Set up a flyer golf course; if indoors use a soft flyer like the Fun Gripper Flyer or Finger Zinger. Use ribbons or colored tape to mark off each target, they can be attached by tying, tacking or taping. Have a starting point and one by one, players should throw their flying disc trying to hit the first marker. If anyone hits the target they will get a one on their scorecard for the first target. The player closest to the target will try again until they hit the target. You will take turns again until everyone has completed the task of hitting the first target. They will record the number of times it took to hit the first target. Then you will move on to the next. At the end, the person with the lowest score wins. If you have a combination of younger players or handicapped participants, allow for advancing these players 3-5 feet closer to the target.

Escargot - French version Hopscotch

Required: Play area and chalk
Players: 2 or more, ages 6 and up

Draw on the sidewalk a snail shaped play area with lines about 12 inches apart for about 15 to 20 squares. Number the squares starting with the outside as the starting point, the first square as number one. The very center of the circle should be a resting stop and just before that is the last number. The first player must hop on one foot without stepping on any lines or putting down the other foot. In the center they can rest and then they must hop back out following the same rules. If they complete this task, they are rewarded one square of their choice to place their initials on, this will give them an additional resting stop. Other players must hop over this stop. The next player will do the same. Anyone who steps on a line or steps on someone’s resting stop loose that turn. You play this until it is impossible to hop to the center or all spaces are initialed. The player with the most spaces initialed is the winner.

Drop the Toothpick

Required: Tooth picks and 20-oz plastic pop bottle
Players: Small group

Set up a desired number of teams. Have a starting line and a plastic pop bottle for each team about 6 yards away. On go, one person from each team is to race to their plastic bottle with a box of tooth picks in hand and try to drop a tooth pick into the bottle while standing over it. Once this is achieved they are to race back without spilling toothpicks, back to line and the next person completes drop until the team is done.
If toothpicks are too hard, try giving the teams raisons. Closing one eye sometimes helps.

Don't Get Caught In The Web

Required: Balls of yarn
Players: Small to medium groups

Find an area that has many obstacles, maybe tables, chairs, doors and other objects. Set up the area ahead of time by running string throughout the area. Make it so that there are only a couple ways to get through the web of string. You can attach it to doors, under tables, across chairs but nothing that would be knocked over that could cause harm to the players or valuable equipment. Have the players come into the area and they must get from one side to the other without touching the web. You can do many variations to this by having someone being a spider that can cause players to go another way without being caught or have a time limit.

Cherry On Top

Required: Newspaper, 5 lb. bag of flour, maraschino cherries and spatula or butter knife
Players: Small groups

This game is best played outdoors on a calm day with clothes that you can get dirty. First spread out newspaper on a table. Pour out the hole bag of flour in a pile, form the pile of flour into a pyramid and then place a cherry on top. Each person playing is to take a turn removing a section of the pyramid with the spatula. Do this very carefully, because…, if you make the cherry fall, you have to pick it up with your teeth, using no hands. Yes, the flour is going to get all over your face. Get a new cherry and play again.

Blinded Number Line

Required: Blindfolds and numbered tags
Players: Small to large groups

Provide blindfolds for all the players. You can have players bring a blindfold or make them out of cheap thick material. Set up teams into groups of 5-7 players. Every player will get one blindfold and will be instructed that they will receive a small tag with a number. They are to read that number to themselves and not let any other player see it. They cannot talk or even react when they read the number because that could give it away. Once all players have read their number they will be instructed to put on their blindfolds. When the leader of the game signals, all players on each team will try to put their members into a numerical order line. When they have accomplished this and are correct they are the winners. But it’s not that easy because here is how you’ll number each set of tags for each team: negative 2, negative 1, zero, 1 and 2. This numbering system is for 5 players per team. Just add additional numbers for larger teams. If your working with lower grade school players try 2, 4, 5, 9, and 11, that system can cause enough confusion. The game will require all players to work as a team as they cannot talk. They can only communicate with their hands to communicate their numbers.

Bean Bag Target Toss

Required: Five Flingocks, bean bags, or smooth stones
Players: Two to six for each target

Playing Area: Three concentric circles are drawn on the floor, start with a 10", then 20", and then 30".
Points allotment: 10 points -10" center
5 points - 20" boundary
2 points - 30" boundary
1 point - on the line
Each player takes a turn throwing bags toward the target about 10 to 15 feet away. To score, toss must be completely in boundary and not touching a line. After each player is given five throws and the score is determined from the final position of that person’s five tosses.
Variations: You can compete against each other by alternating throws.

Tugboat Relay Race

Required: Pool, two ropes and two floating rafts
Players: Small to large groups

Set up teams and you’ll need at least 4 people to hold ropes unless you have a sturdy fence to tie two ropes across the length of the pool. The ropes should hang across the pool within arms length of someone on a raft in the water. Each team will have one raft and one rope to use to cross the pool. Both teams will line up behind each team starter. The first person on each team will lay or sit on raft and using their arms only, pull themselves across the pool and back. The remaining pople on that team will do the same and the first team done is the winner.

Trash Target

Required: Splash Water Bombs, rain gear (cold weather), and trash can lids
Players: Small to medium groups

Set up teams and face off. The first player on each team will wear rain gear and hold trash can lid, a player from the opposing team will try to hit him with three water bombs. If the player is hit on the body, the other team receives a point. If he deflects throw with trash can lid his team receives a point. Next they switch and the other team has a turn. They continue until each player has a turn to throw and to deflect. Mark off a square that the player should stand in and cannot step out of , if he steps out his teams looses a point. The team with the most points wins.

The Shark & The Mermaids

Required: Large pool
Players: Small to medium groups

How to play:
One person is chosen to be the shark and the others are mermaids. The Shark starts on the side of the pool close to the middle (the ladder) while the mermaids start at one end of the pool. When the shark says go, the mermaids must try to make it across the pool and back. Meanwhile the shark jumps in and starts to try and tag the mermaids. If a mermaid is tagged they are frozen and it is up to another mermaid to unfreeze them. The mermaids win if they each make it across the pool and back and are all touching the end of the pool. The Shark wins if everyone is tagged and frozen.

Rules:
•If you are frozen you cannot unfreeze anyone even if they are only an inch away.
•The shark may go under water.
•All the mermaids must have touched the opposite end of the pool before they can make their way back.
•Mermaids can communicate.

Sponge Toss Contest

Required: Large car sponges, large containers of water, receiving buckets, warm weather
Players: Small to large groups

Divide up into teams. You can have as many teams as you have equipment. Each team forms a line with teammates a little more than an arms length away from each other. At one end of the line is a large container of water with large sponges in it. The other end has a small bucket, which you could mark with a fill line where you want the finish point to be or just fill to the top. When signaled to start, teams are to race. The person at the large container is to throw a sponge to next teammate and that person to the next until it reaches the end of the line. The last person is to squeeze the sponge out and then run to the start of the line, dip the sponge in the large container and pass to next person. If sponge is dropped while being passed, it is to be thrown back to the start of the line and you are to continue again. After full rotation of line, meaning everyone has taken sponge out of large container and passed, the team with the most collected water is the winner.

Shaving Cream Shoot Off

Required: Water guns, shaving cream, water source, hot day, and clothes to get wet in
Players: Small to large groups

Set up as many teams as you would like to have. Each team must have one large water gun filled with water and one team member willing to get wet. Make sure that all the designated targets don't have a shirt that has an iron-on design on the front, this prevents the game from being far. On the willing team member, squirt shaving cream on the front of their shirt. If you do the same design, it makes the amount of shaving cream the same for all teams. Each member of the team will get one squirt from the water gun to try and remove the shaving cream. You will rotate the team line until all the shaving cream is removed. The first team to remove the cream is the cream of the crop or in other words, "The Winners".

Poison Pool Toss

Required: Splash Water Bombs, noodles, Finger Zingers, and other soft balls
Players: Medium to large groups

Great pool game for large gatherings. Divide the pool in half using a rope or net with players evenly distributed on both sides. If there is a deep end, make sure that players on that side are good swimmers. Have two baskets full of pool toys like noodles, vinyl balls, Splash Water Bombs, Finger Zingers and other soft-sided balls. With same number of toys in each basket, dump them in the water on each side of the line. On go, all players will try to throw the items to the other side of the line and try to keep their side of the pool free of items. You can give them 5 – 10 minutes to do so. When the whistle blows they are to stop immediately. The team with the least amount of items is the winner.

Over/Under Game

Required: Buckets of water, sponges, pitchers
Players: Small to large groups

Divide the group into two teams. Have them form a single file line facing the persons head next to them. At the head of each line put a bucket of water. At the other end put a pitcher with a line drawn on it. Give a sponge to the person at the head of the line where the water bucket is. That person has to dip the sponge in the water to soak in as much water as they can. They have to then pass the soaking wet sponge over their head to the person behind who then passes the sponge to the person behind them through their legs. The sponge makes its way back over the head of one person and between the legs of the next till it gets to the person standing next to the pitcher. That person must squeeze whatever water is left into the pitcher and run the sponge back up to the head of the line. When this occurs, everybody moves back one position and the person who was at the back of the line now is at the head of the line. Continue process till the pitcher is filled to line. Fun game on hot day. (Suggested to play outdoors)

Jump Rope Water Splash

Required: Jump rope, plastic cups, and water
Players: Small to large groups

Give each child a plastic or paper cup full of water. While two players twirl a large jump rope, jumpers one by one are to attempt three consecutive jumps. They are to do this while holding onto their cup of water and trying to do let any water spill. The child that has the most water left is the winner. You can keep playing until only one person has water left in their cup.

Hole In The Bucket

Required: One large trash can or 30 gallon tub, two receiving buckets, water source and two large coffee cans
Players: Small to large groups

Punch several holes into the bottom and the sides of your cans using a hammer and large nail. Large juice or bean cans will work also. Do this from the outside go into the can to prevent sharp edges on the outside. Make sure there are no sharp edges around the top of can, you can do this by hammering around the inside edge while against a hard surface. You can spray paint your cans with car paint ahead of time for different colored teams. Fill up a large clean container of water at starting point. At the other end of play field have a receiving bucket the same size for each team. Divide into teams and have one person at a time from each team do relay. Each person is to go to the large container, dip their can into it, put the can on their head or carry it in front of them, go down the field to their teams receiving bucket and pour what water is left into the bucket. Once they have done this they can run back to starting point and give the next person the can to do the same. The first team to fill their receiving bucket is the winner.

Greased Watermelon Polo

Required: Pool, watermelon, jar of petroleum jelly or shortening
Players: Small to large groups

The object of the game is to get the greased watermelon to opposing team’s end Wall. “Grease up” a full-size watermelon (and 1 or 2 more for backup or to add a twist) with petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) or shortening (like Crisco) by spreading it all over the entire watermelon. Divide the group into two teams. Have teams start along “their wall” opposite each other, a rectangular pool works best. Drop, don't throw, the watermelon into the center of the pool. At the referee’s signal or when the watermelon hits the water, the teams move to get the watermelon. Players attempt to move the watermelon, without lifting it out of the water, to the opposing team’s wall/side. They can push it, grab and swim/run with it or propel it through the water. They may not lift it out of the water! If a player lifts the watermelon out of the water it is a foul, play stops and the “fouling” team goes back to their wall. The other team maintains possession of the watermelon where the foul was committed and play resumes. Players grapple for position and possession of watermelon, but may not choke, kick, bite, or strike other players. They may however “wrestle” the watermelon out of opposing players arms. Remember at this point that the watermelon will be quite slippery, and after 5 minutes the players will be too! If one team gets the watermelon to touch the opposing team’s wall they score a point. If a point is scored, replace the watermelon with another that is greased-up or grease-up existing watermelon for the next round. Play to whatever score you choose.

Variation: -Add a watermelon or two.
It’s a great game, though it can be tiring! Watch out for the big jocks who like to show off, they might hurt someone! Make up your own variations, and then eat the watermelon afterwards!

Fill the Bottle

Required: 4 oz paper cups, 20 oz plastic pop bottles, clean bucket, finish line, sense of humor and no fear of getting wet
Players: Small to large groups

Set up number of teams possibly by number of people willing to get wet. On each team, one person lays on ground while holding a 20-oz plastic pop bottle on their forehead. Teammates run to bucket to fill up their 4-oz cup then they attempt to pour it into teammates pop bottle while standing over head. Then the next teammate will do the same until 20-oz bottle is filled. Once the 20-oz bottle is filled, the bottle person should run to the finish line without spilling.

Dolphin Relay

Required: Swimming pool & one ball per team
Players: Small to large groups
Divide into teams. The first player from each team will race down and back the length of the pool while pushing the ball with their noses and forehead. If they touch the ball with their hands or any other part of their body they must go back to where that took place and start again. The next player will do the same until one team is the winner. With good swimmers, this can be done by swimming in the deep end of the pool. For a game with non swimmers, play in the shallow end.

Beach Ball Bumper Pool

Required: Beach balls, ropes and swimming pool
Players: Small to medium groups

Rope off one section of the swimming pool. Each player will be given one beach ball to balance themselves on with their arms hugging the ball and locked. All players will do this inside of the roped off area. On go, the players will swim around in this position trying to push others players against any rope or wall of the pool. If any player touches a rope or wall, looses his balance or uses his arms, they are out of the game. They cannot use their feet to kick other players. The last player that survives the derby is the winner.

Beach Ball Balance Race

Required: Beach balls and swimming pool
Players: Small to medium groups

Each player will need one beach ball or you could play this game as teams with each team given a beach ball. All players will be in the water at one end of the pool. They are to balance their bodies on top of the beach ball by hugging the beach ball. On go they are to race to the other side of the pool and then back while in this position. They cannot loose their balance or unlock their arms. The first player back to the starting point is the winner. The game takes great balance and leg strength and is wonderful exercise for a hot summer day. Make sure that all players know how to swim to play this game. To be played as a team relay, the next player in line will be waiting in the water to take the beach ball once it touches the wall. All the other players will be outside of the pool in a line. The first team done is the winner.

Hot Valentine

Hidden Surprise

Required: Pill bottle, tape, newspaper, money, dice
Players: Small to medium groups

Here’s a game for both the young and old. Take an empty pill bottle and place an amount of money in it. Whatever you decide you want the winner to have. Wrap it up with layers of newspaper and duct tape, electrical tape or any other kind of tape. You can even layer it with different types and make a huge tape ball. Have everyone stand in a circle. Take a set of dice and place them in a flat box. If the person rolls a double, they must go inside the circle and start working on getting the tape ball apart. They continue unwrapping until the next person rolls a double. Keep going until someone wins the money. This can take awhile and it is real fun and exciting for all ages.
You can modify this game using different containers to hold food or other prizes.

Fork Over The Chocolate

Required: Chocolate bar, knife, forks, pair of large gloves, clothing
Players: Small to medium groups

You need a bar of chocolate (preferably cold for older players), knife and several forks, a dice, a pair of large gloves and some other items of clothing depending on age group. e.g. scarf, hat, large coat or jacket, trousers, waistcoat, the list is endless.
Everybody forms a circle, half circle or sits on chairs. One person starts by throwing the dice followed by each person in turn. When someone throws a six he then runs to where all the clothes are and starts putting them on, once he is completely dressed he can then start trying to eat the bar of chocolate, with the knife and fork of course, cutting one square at a time. While they are doing this the rest continue throwing the dice and if someone else throws a six, the person eating the chocolate has to stop and get undressed while the next person tries to get dressed and start eating the chocolate etc... The games obviously ends once the chocolate has been eaten.

Ducks N Hens

Required: Two objects
Players: Small to medium groups

Circle up in groups of 8-10. Hand one person two random objects. One of these random objects represents a duck, the other represents a hen. The person is a “vendor”. His goal is to sell the foul. To his right, he passes the first item, and says, “Do you want to buy a duck?” The “buyer” says, “Does it quack?” The vendor says, “Yes it quacks.” The duck continues to be passed to the right with the question and answer session going all the way back to the original vendor and back to the current transaction. (B asks A, A answers B, B sells to C, C asks B, B must turn around and ask A, A answers B, B answers C, C sells to D, D asks C, C asks B, B asks A, A answers B, B answers C, C answers D, and so on.) In the meantime, immediately after the duck is sold, the original vendor turns to his left with the hen, and says, “Do you want to buy a hen?” The buyer asks, “Does it cackle?” “Yes it cackles.” Same deal with the hen... the question and answer session goes all the way back to the original vendor. The fun comes when the messages start to cross. It’s hilarious!

Duck, Duck, Squirt

Do You Love Your Neighbor?

All players sit in a circle except one person who sits on someone’s lap and asks, “Do you love your neighbor?” If he/she says YES, you all move one seat in any direction and the person that’s IT try’s to get a seat. If he/she does, then the person left standing is IT. However if he says NO then the IT asks, “Who do you love?” The person that was chosen then answers with a physical trait of other people in the circle (ex. glasses, shoes, hair color, and style of cloths) and those people move to any seat they can get except for there own.

Colonial Circle

Players: Small to medium groups
This is a very old game from the colonial days

One player will be the chosen British spy and all other players will be in a circle formation holding hands, facing inward. The spy will request to enter the circle by saying, “Please good people let me in so I can warm my toes and light my pipe”. The players will allow that person to come into the circle. That player will enter and stand in the center of the circle. He will act out that he is warming his toes and lighting his pipe by saying “Ah, it’s great to be able to light my pipe and it’s great to warm my toes”. As he's doing so, he’ll figure out a way out of the circle and then suddenly try to escape through one set of players locked arms. If captured he picks a new spy and the original spy has to sit in the center. If he escapes he picks a new spy to come back and spy with him. When they try to escape, they will exit at different locations in the circle.

Circle Delight

Required: Two balls
Players: Small to large groups

Two teams stand alternately in a single circle formation. Each team has a ball. At the signal the balls are thrown in the same direction from person to person belonging to the same team. The balls start moving from opposing players standing opposite each other in the circle. The purpose is to see if one team can move its ball from player to player at such a speed that it overtakes the ball from the opposing team. If this happens one point is scored and the game begins again. The first team to score three points wins. Note: The ball must be relayed between players of one team as they are positioned in the circle while not hindering the opposing team.

Body Jump Relay

Required: 6 players per team
Players: Medium to large groups

Each team will have the players lie down on the ground, face up, fanned out in a circle with their heads facing the middle of the circle. On go, the first person from each circle, gets up and runs around the circle jumping over the other team members. Once around he will lie back down and the #2 person will do the same. Then you keep playing until all the players have completed the task. The first team to complete the cycle is the winner. For added fun and excitement with youth groups, a blindfold can be passed to the player that is getting up. They can half walk and crawl around the circle with members instructing them where to go.
Another version is having them race/walk backwards.

Big Chief

Players: Small to large groups

Have all players sit in a circle and then chose a person to be “it”. The “it” is to leave so that “it” cannot see or hear. Choose one person to be the chief and he will act out short movements. Examples are clapping hands three times, stomping feet 4 times, etc. All other players must do what the Chief does. Have “it” return to the group to figure out who is the Big Chief, you can give him up to three guesses if there’s a large group.

Apples to Oranges

Required: One apple, one orange, paper, pencil, container, and music
Players: Small to large groups

Print out slips of paper that you will pull out of a container. Each slip will be labeled differently as follows: before the apple, the apple, after the apple, before the orange, the orange, and after the orange. You might want to do a couple sets in case certain slips become detectable after use. Once you’ve completed the slips place them in a container mix them up. Have players stand in a circle, give the apple to one person and the orange to someone across the circle, then start the music. They are to pass the fruits until the music stops. When the music stops, pull out a slip of paper and read it. If the paper states before the specific fruit that person is out. If it’s after the specific fruit that person is out. If it just states a fruit that person is out. So not only do you have to worry about holding the fruit but where it is in the circle. If you have a large group, set up several circles or a circle within a circle would be cool. You could also use different colored FlingSocks instead of fruit. Variations to the game can be passing the fruits under the leg, behind the back or twirl around once then pass the fruit.

BP Life - memorial
B-P.'s health deteriorated to the point that in 1938 he moved to Kenya to spend the last days of his life in Africa. He finally passed away on January 8th 1941. In his belongings was his last message to Scouts throughout the world:

Dear Scouts - if you have ever seen the play 'Peter Pan' you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possible, when the time came for him to die, he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of goodbye.

Remember, it is the last time you will ever hear from me, so think it over.

I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have a happy life too.

I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness does not come from being rich, nor merely being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so you can enjoy life when you are a man.

Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.

But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. 'Be Prepared' i this way, to live happy and to die happy - stick to your Scout Promise always - even after you have ceased to be a boy - and God help you to do it.

The Diversity Game (Patrol Activity)

Time Allowed 60 minutes
Learning Objectives
The Diversity Game provides an opportunity for patrols to continue the discussions begun earlier in the day during the sessions “Leading Change” and “Valuing People and Leveraging Diversity.” The smaller setting and the nature of the questions in the game can encourage participants to more fully explore important issues of diversity and change.

• The same board, game pieces, and rules as the Who-Me Game played on the evening of Day One
• Diversity Game cards

Delivery Method
The game is introduced by the troop guide in such a way that all patrol members feel comfortable in participating fully. Troop guide departs and does not stay with the patrol during the playing of the game.

Team Formation, Gathering Activities,
Orientation, and Staff Exhibit

Learning Objectives
As a result of these activities, participants will be able to

• Consider themselves for the moment to be a Cub Scout den led by a den chief (the patrol’s staff member).
• Enjoy several brief and entertaining get-acquainted activities.
• Locate the course facilities, meeting places, living quarters, and other relevant
landmarks.
• Understand emergency response procedures for which they will be responsible.
• View the staff exhibit, both to gain from the material being presented and to see a model presentation of the sorts of exhibits they will later prepare themselves.
Materials Needed
• For each participant, a pen
• Materials for Cub Scouting—related Gathering Time activities
• For each participant, a copy of the Day One The Gilwell Gazette (Included in the paper is a schedule of events for Day One.)
• For each participant, a Wood Badge participant notebook
• A den chief shoulder cord for each staff member who will act as a den chief (These den chiefs are the same staff members who will serve as the patrols’ troop guides.)
• A staff exhibit (Staff members preparing the exhibit should follow the same exhibit guidelines that will be distributed later in the course to the patrols. The staff exhibit must set high standards of quality, should involve several staff members in its presentation, and should have both static and interactive elements.)

Recommended Facility Layout
Teams will probably form near the area used to sign in participants upon their arrival. The orientation may range out into the meeting area and locations of overnight accommodations. Positioning the team get-acquainted activities and the staff exhibit near Gilwell Field will simplify gathering participants for the first Gilwell Field assembly.
Delivery Method
You will need several staff members to serve as orientation guides and some to help with the gathering time activities. The staff exhibit will be presented by the troop guides.
Gathering Time Activities
There should be several gathering time activities. The purpose is to give the participant an opportunity to review the Cub Scout Promise that will be used at the opening assembly later today. It would also be appropriate for Webelos Scouts to have an activity designed around learning the Scout Oath and Law. Those will be used later in the day as well as the rest of the course. The gathering time activities follow the Cub Scout meeting format and will alert the participants that Wood Badge training begins as soon as they arrive.
As the participants participate in the activities, it would be appropriate for them to
receive a bead to hang on a cord, much like the progress towards rank recognition for Cub Scouts. The following are some suggested activities.

Cub Scout Promise and Law Puzzle
Materials needed: Cards that have been printed with Cub Scout Promise on one side and Cub Scout Law of the Pack on the other. The cards should be cut into puzzle pieces and kept together so that each participant receives a complete puzzle.
Method: Encourage each participant to put his puzzle together, securing it with
adhesive tape. The participant should put the card in his or her pocket to have during
the opening assembly.

Cub Scout Secrets
Materials needed: A card with a circle that has been divided into four sections,
each section a different color. A spinner should be attached so that when the participant
spins the spinner it lands on a color quadrant. You will need four stacks of
colored cards to match the colors on the spinner. The questions on the cards should
include the following.
• What is the sign for Cub Scouting? (arm fully extended with two fingers split
like the “victory” sign)
• What do the two fingers of the Cub Scout sign symbolize? (the two parts of the
(Jab Scout Promise—to help other people and to obey)
• What is our pack number? (Gilwell Pack 1)
• What is the Cub Scout motto? (Do Your Best)
• What is the highest award in Cub Scouting? (The Arrow of Light Award)
• What are the Cub Scout colors? (blue and gold)
• What does “Webelos” stand for? (We’ll be loyal Scouts)
• Name a purpose of Cub Scouting. (Character development, spiritual growth,
good citizenship, sportsmanship and fitness, family understanding, respectful relationships,
personal achievement, friendly service, fun and adventure, preparation for Boy
Scouting)
Method: Have a staff member there to monitor the game. Ask each participant to
spin the dial and then choose a card that matches the color quadrant the spinner landed
in. The participant reads the question on the card and tells the game monitor his or her
answer. Any single successful answer will enable the participant to “win” and move
to another station.

What’s Next?
As part of earning the Arrow of Light Award, a Webelos Scout must learn the
Scout Oath and Law.
Materials needed: The Scout Law posted where participants can see it; cards with one point of the Scout Law printed on each (except for “Reverent”); a pocketsize copy of the Scout Law for each participant.
Method: Ask participants to turn over one of the cards and tell what comes after that point of the Scout Law.

Rearrange
Materials needed: Several cards with the Scout Oath on one side and the Scout Law on the other. Cut the card into pieces so that each piece has one phrase of the Scout Oath (ignore the Scout Law on the back for now).
Method: Ask each participant to arrange the pieces together so that the Scout Oath is revealed. Tape it together and show them that the Scout Law is now in order on the back. Suggest that they carry this in their pockets for future reference.

Win All You Can Game (The Game of Life) (Troop Activity)
Time Allowed : 60 minutes

Learning Objectives
This is an application session designed to reinforce the learning points about leadership that were introduced in earlier sessions, including living the values, stages of team development, and teamwork. It will help participants realize the importance of ethical leadership and servant leadership, use of the Golden Rule, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Law as guides for leading one’s self first, and then leading others. It demonstrates the feelings and actions of people who feel betrayed, and it demonstrates that no one wins unless everyone wins.

Note: This session is a game—and only a game, but it can have a powerful and long-lasting impact. People learn by doing. They experience situations and then process how they feel about it. They generalize how this experience fits into everything else they know and come to conclusions, usually on their own, about the game’s learning points. Yes, there can be emotion and hurt in this game. It is better to come to grips with what ethical leadership is (and is not) in a game than it is to learn in real life. A lot of the lessons we learn in life are learned from our mistakes or the mistakes of others, and those mistakes can be painful.
Select the facilitator carefully. Bring in a guest facilitator if you don’t have the right person on your staff.

The key to the game is the debriefing. During the game, some learners are taken down to the depths of despair. The debriefing needs to carefully bring them back up, with a new understanding about leadership and life and the role they can play in each. The cracker barrel that follows should be a feel-good event, a celebration about trust, truth, honesty, promise-keeping, and loyalty. Don’t allow it to be a wake. Rather, it is a happy fellowship taking place among a group that has a new appreciation for the values that are central to Scouting, just as those values are also central to leadership and to living life itself.

Materials Needed
• Large signs, saying The Game of Life and Win All You Can!
• Two 6-by-6 inch cards for each group (one picturing the Wood Badge ax and log on both the front and the back of a bright green card; the other picturing the Wood Badge beads on both the front and the back of a bright red card)
• Handouts (one per participant), printed with the scoring system on one side and the game rules on the other side
• Scoreboards (one for every four groups, see appendix)
• Markers
• Pocket calculators for each group (optional)

The game is presented by a lead facilitator. In addition, a scorekeeper is assigned to every four groups. If necessary, staff members may be used to comprise additional groups. The total number of groups playing the game must be divisible by four.

Presentation ProcedureSetup of the Game
To play this game there must be a minimum of four groups, and the total number of groups in the game must be divisible by 4 (that is, 4, 8,12, etc.). Each patrol should be a group. Additional groups may need to be created from among the staff so that the total number of groups is divisible by four.

The groups are further clustered into larger groups, with four small groups (patrols) in each one. Each of these larger groups has a facilitator/scorekeeper and a scoreboard on which to tally the scores for the four groups in that cluster.

The lead facilitator directs the entire game and the debriefing that follows.

Presumably, the game will take place in the troop meeting room and the patrols can be at their usual tables, depending on the number of additional groups to be added to the game. It will be helpful to disperse the staff facilitators and scoreboards around the room and have the smaller groups in each larger cluster be reasonably close to the groups they are serving. Some movement and separation of tables may be appropriate beyond the normal room setup.

Note for staff members playing the game: The senior patrol leader and troop guides should have no active part in the game other than the senior patrol leader leading the group in reciting the Scout Law before round 10. Troop guides need to be watching their patrols for signs of intense feelings. When necessary, staff members form groups and play the game with participants. Staff members should know of their involvement in advance and have their group name and cheer predetermined. If more than one staff group is required, scatter them so there is only one staff group in each large cluster.

Staff behavior during the game should be passive rather than active. Staff members can participate but should not generate ideas during conferencing. Live the Scouting values. Don’t coerce anyone participating to lie or cheat.

Always be honest and ethical. Cast votes according to your commitments.

Also, don’t disclose any knowledge of the game or the learning points the game is intended to illuminate. It is up to the participants to figure out those on their own or to come to understand them during the debriefing. The game, and this session, will teach itself when properly presented and debriefed. That is not to say this session does not require a strong facilitator to present it; it simply means that, when the facilitator presents and leads the game correctly, participants figure out most of the learning points on their own, and the facilitator’s role is primarily to lead the conversation to bring them out.

Play the game all the way through, even when people appear down or outraged by what is happening, or even when it appears the patrols understand it. As the stakes of the game are raised, patrols often change the way they play.

Occasionally someone in a group may remember having played this game previously. If so, that is fine. Let them know that this particular version of the game has been specifically adapted for Wood Badge. Experience indicates that individuals who know the game will have no more influence on their group or on the game itself than those who have never played.

Playing the Game
At the beginning of the game, the facilitator announces the name of the game:
The Game of Life. “The objective of the game is to win all you can!” The facilitator should repeat this often and with great enthusiasm, and should ask the participants to repeat the name of the game and its objective often throughout the game.

Show the rules and scoring system on a flip chart and distribute the handout, one to each participant. Review the scoring and the rules (detailed below). If there are questions about the rules, facilitators should not provide other information except to remind groups constantly that the objective is to “win all you can!”

To begin, ask each group for their name and to develop a group cheer, if they don’t already have one. Ask groups to start performing them right away. Don’t give them much time. As performances begin, react to those you like and those you don’t. Chastise any groups that are slow to perform in a friendly, teasing way. Keep it light—and fun.
The key at this stage is to create a high energy level. Think of yourself as a cheerleader at a campfire. Work to create enthusiasm.

You are seeking strong group identity and you’re building a sense of competition between groups. This can be a fairly chaotic time. It is the last session on the second night (or the last night of the first weekend) of the course and participants are ready for fun. They have just finished the Wood Badge Game Show session, and this session will seem, at first, to build on that.

The Rules
1. Each group will choose a name, preferably one that is unique and clever. (Patrols can use their patrol names.)
2. Each group should be able to perform a cheer, yell, or song to express its enthusiasm for participating in The Game of Life.
3. Once the game begins, participants may talk only with members of their own group—no exceptions.
4. One member of each group should be designated to hold up one of the group’s cards (the vote) when instructed to do so during each round of the game.
5. Points are awarded to groups according to the score sheet. Decisions of the facilitators are final.
6. Win all you can!

Explain the Scoring
It is so simple that some people won’t believe it. To determine scoring, each group decides to hold up (cast a vote with) one of the team’s cards, either the red “ax and log” card or the green “beads” card. The lead facilitator counts to three. On three, the designated leader of each group must hold up the card the group has selected. Based on the vote, the facilitators/scorekeepers record the scores within each cluster of four groups. That completes a round.

In total, 10 rounds are played. Scores are reviewed and groups encouraged to perform their cheers after rounds three, six, and nine. The lead facilitator should call on each scorekeeper to report and comment on the scores of each group. Guides should report the scores and comment like a TV sports commentator.

Point values are doubled for rounds four, five, and six.

For round four and for the remainder of the game, groups are permitted to send one representative from their group to confer with representatives of the other three groups in their cluster before the vote for that round. Allow a few minutes for conferencing and a few minutes for the conferees to discuss the conference with their groups before voting.

Note: This conferencing dimension of the game should not be revealed to participants until it comes up in the course of the game. Only one conferee per group is allowed to conference with representatives of other groups. Except for the conferees, no talking is permitted between groups.

Point values are multiplied by five for rounds seven, eight, and nine.

Conferencing continues in each round. Usually some element of lying and betrayal has begun among the groups during these rounds. Enthusiasm for the cheers and the scores begins to wane and may be snuffed out altogether. While continuing to encourage a display of spirit, the facilitator should acknowledge this waning enthusiasm to the entire group and wonder out loud, naively, what is happening. Don’t ask for or invite any debriefing or conversation at that point, however. That should only occur at the end of round 10.

After round seven or eight, the facilitator may want to remind participants of Scouting’s values all of which are clearly posted on the walls of the meeting room from earlier sessions of the Wood Badge course, and have been the focus of much of the course so far.

Before playing the final round (round 10), the facilitator invites the senior patrol leader, who has not been playing the game, to come forward to lead the troop in reciting the Scout Law. Point values are multiplied by 10 for this round. This is a final chance to win. One final conference is held for round 10, votes are taken, final scores are tallied, and the scorekeeper makes a final report after the round.

Note: It is possible (and occasionally it happens) that some group will figure out in conference that the only way for everyone to win is for all groups to hold up “beads” cards. If that occurs, great. But don’t react. Just keep playing the game.

The Debriefing
Begin the debriefing by talking with the teams that lost “big.” Ask them to describe what happened and how they feel. Move from group to group, from those with the lowest scores to those with the highest. You are trying to find someone on a losing team who expresses the learning points of the game. If you find such a comment, pursue it for further understanding and elaboration. Take time for every losing team to talk.

Note: Sometimes the facilitator will become aware during the game that an individual or team has figured out the learning points. If that is the case, don’t go to them right away during the debriefing. Talk with others first. Save those who have figured it out for last, if possible. Deal with what happened and feelings first. Then move to lessons learned—the learning points from playing the game.

Point out how to win the game; that is, by everyone voting all “beads” all the time.
Be alert for people who feel emotionally hurt by the game and the betrayal of people in their group or in other groups. If you come across them in the debriefing discussion, acknowledge their feelings and move the discussion to other people to continue the debriefing. After the session you’ll need to come back to those who were deeply affected by the game and talk with them to help them bring a positive closure to the experience.
Be alert. This is a powerful game and can trigger strong emotions. There is a fine line between “anger” and “danger.” Participants are often shocked to realize that such a simple game can become so complex and so revealing. Most participants easily recognize the comparison between life and The Game of Life.

The debriefing allows the facilitator to drive home important points about leaders and leadership, having to do with trust, honesty, teams, and teamwork. The you in “win all you can!” is all of us. No one wins unless everyone wins.

All of these things and the feelings people have about their participation in the game need to be covered and discussed by the facilitator during the debriefing. Each game is always unique and unpredictable—so is the debriefing. The facilitator will have to adjust the discussion and cover the learning points somewhat differently for each game, on the fly, using what actually happens in each particular game to validate the learning points.

When the participants have voiced their opinions and feelings, move to the learning points below to close the session.

Sometimes, to reduce emotions and tension, the facilitator may want to take personal responsibility for setting up the players to bring out the worst in them during the game. That is certainly preferable to allowing any blame to continue beyond or after the playing of game.

This game, properly played and presented by the facilitator, will practically debrief itself, with most of the learning points expressed by the participants in their own words. Don’t force it, just let it happen, and allow participants to make of it what they will.

The Learning Points
The Game of Life is truly fascinating. In the game, people may behave in much the same way that people do in real life. Some are honest. Some cheat. Some start out the right way but change, or are changed by others. Some carry a grudge. Some plot and plan to get even. Tempers are aroused and feelings hurt when people are betrayed.

All of us carry these potentials around with us, and all of us are sometimes guilty of acting on them. We’re not perfect. We’re all students of The Game of Life, just as we are students learning about leadership in this Wood Badge course.

The game was just a game—a mirror, if you will—to help us see ourselves and our imperfections a little more clearly. That way we can do something about them. If we choose to do so, we can improve and grow personally.

Trust is so important, it is included as the first point of the Scout Law.

Trust actually has to do with four separate values: honesty, integrity, promise-keeping, and loyalty. They all come into play in The Game of Life, in real life and in the art of leadership.

• Honesty. There are two kinds of honesty: honesty in communication and honesty in conduct. Honesty in communication requires a good-faith intent
to be truthful, accurate, straightforward, and fair in all communication so that people are not misled or deceived. Honesty in conduct prohibits cheating, fraud, subterfuge, and trickery to acquire anything of value.

• Integrity. Integrity is about consistency between principle and practice. It requires us to “walk our talk” and to make decisions consistent with our values, especially our ethical values.

• Promise-keeping. A promise or other commitment creates a legitimate basis for another person to rely upon us. Once given, it imposes the responsibility of making all reasonable efforts to fulfill it. It is an absolutely critical aspect of trustworthiness.

• Loyalty. Loyalty implies a special responsibility to promote and protect the interests of certain persons or organizations. It is a duty that extends beyond the normal obligation of concern for others.

When a leader is unable to demonstrate all of these values through his actions, people lose confidence. They stop trusting. Without the trust of those they are leading, leaders cannot lead for very long.

Trust is virtually impossible to regain once it is lost. No one wins The Game of Life unless everyone wins. The you in “win all you can!” is all of us. For a leader, winning all you can” should mean that everyone needs to win. Those who win at the expense of others are not really winners, nor are they effective leaders.

Groups fall apart (and leaders are ousted) when people are betrayed. Sometimes leaders even betray those they lead. Sometimes groups betray other groups to achieve an objective.

Participants in this game (and leaders in real life) need to think through who the
“ ,, . .you is in win all you can!” Effective leaders walk the talk; they put loyalty to others, and to the team, first. They live the meaning of the Scout Oath and Law.

As leaders in Scouting, and as leaders in our families, our workplaces, and our communities, we have a tremendous responsibility and a dilemma. The responsibility is to constantly set the very best possible example and to be the role model in everything we do, say, and are. The problem is, we are not perfect. We are flawed human beings, just like everyone else on the planet. Sometimes the temptations we face in The Game of Life get to us, and we do things we realize, in hindsight, that we should not have done.

The dilemma we face is between our responsibility to those we serve as leaders— thinking about what is best for them, for the group, for the team—and of “winning all we can” for ourselves.

As leaders in Scouting, there is only one way for us to face that dilemma, and that is to put others first—the group, the team, those we lead. In a sense, the leader is actually the servant of those he leads.

The Scout Oath puts it simply: To help other people at all times. The best leaders know this. They know who the YOU is in “Win All You Can!”

To close the session, form a closing circle, repeat the Scout Oath and Law under the leadership of the senior patrol leader, and sing “On My Honor.”

• Pengertian
The Scout of The World Award adalah sebuah inisiatif untuk membantu
NSO/Kwartir Nasional merevitalisasi program mereka untuk usia Pramuka Penegak
dan Pramuka Pandega, 15-26 tahun, putra dan putri, dengan memberikan keterampilan dan kesempatan pada orang muda untuk menghadapi tantangan dan permasalahan di dunia.
The Scout of the World Award sudah dikembangkan pada kerangka prioritas strategi “Youlth Involvement – Pelibatan angota dewasa muda” dan “anggota muda” yang telah disetujui pada World Scout Conference di Thessaloniki pada tahun 2002.

Waktu yang diperlukan untuk bakti masyarakat paling sedikit 2 minggu penuh , dengan durasi waktu kerja penuh (tidak paruh waktu). Bentuk dari bakti masyarakat SW , dapat mengambil 2 bentuk , (1). Membantu kegiatan yang telah berjalan dan
dikembangkan oleh organisasi (kepramukaan , lembaga kepemudaan , NGO / Non- Govermental-Organization / Lembaga non Pemerintah) (2) mengembangkan proyek
spesifik bakti masyarakat bersama kelompok atau teman.
Contoh kegiatan Bakti masyarakat :
Ikut serta dalam perkemahan karya untuk perlindungan lingkungan
merencanakan dan menjalankan "Desa Pengembangan Global" dalam suatu event remaja Internasional

Pemuda/i yang berusia 15-26 tahun , anggota/bukan anggota pramuka di negaranya , memiliki kesempatan untuk mendapatkan penghargaan.Langkah langkah yang harus diikuti :
Menghubungi Kwartir Nasional dan bertanya mengenai SW Award dan buku
Log/catatan SW.Tanyakan lebih jelas mengenai tempat dimana kita bias mendapatkan Pendalaman / pengamatan SW (SW discovey), dan bagaimana cara mendaftarnya .
Mendaftar , dan menyelesaikan pendidikan SW discovery dengan tujuan untuk menambah pengetahuan dan kemampuan , untuk memeprsiapkan diri untuk kegiatan bhakti masyarakat SW.
Melakukan kegiatan bakti masyarakat SW , baik secara sendiri maupun berkelompok
Menyelesaikan proses dan laporan evaluasi , dan mencatat semua aktivitasnya dalam Paspor SW , yang bisa didapatkan dari buku agenda SW , dan mengirimkannya ke kantor SW pusat / Kwarda / Kwarnas masing masing. Jika syarat dan kelengkapan semua sudah dipenuhi, SW Award akan diberikan.

Pramuka berbasis Dunia
Di seluruh dunia , terdapat ribuan pangkalan pramuka dan juga bumi perkemahan , mereka semua diundang untuk menjadi pramuka berbasis dunia , dan memainkan peran utama dalam pengembangan program. Secara temporal - pada waktu tertentu – SW dapat dibentuk pada waktu eveneven

Description: Less dangerous than the black widow, with the exception of babies.

Treatment:

Chiggers

Description

It is generally visible only with magnification. Chiggers are different than

mites in that they feed only in the larval stage. The chigger larvae get

onto the skin and move around until they meet some obstacle, for

example the waistband of underwear, the elastic band of socks, etc.

They then attach to the skin and begin feeding. The area around where

they are feeding usually turns red with an itching sensation.

Treatment:

1. Wash area with soap and water

2. Apply local topical hydrocortisone cream; antihistamine, or local

anesthetic cream should be applied to reduce the itching. Calamine

lotion can also be used.

3. The wounds must not be scratched

1. Scrape the stinger away with the edge of a credit card, knife blade,

cause more bee/wasp venom into the skin.

2. After removing the stinger, wash the area with soap and water.

3. Apply a cool washcloth or ice pack.

Procedure

Introduction Consider the Norman Rockwell painting of the Scoutmaster. It is a starlit night and the boys are

all asleep in their perfectly pitched tents. The Scoutmaster, who looks like a cross between Cary Grant and John Wayne, is standing by the embers of the campfire. He is deep in contemplation, his face serene and satisfied. The message seems to be that the Scoutmaster is utterly competent in all that he does.

On the other hand, the message could just as well be that the only moment of peace and quiet the poor man gets is when the entire troop is unconscious.

Where was Rockwell earlier in the day when the Scoutmaster was shouting things like, “Hey, you kids stop poking that bear with that stick!” Where is the painting of the Cubmaster trying to calm parents upset over the outcome of a pinewood derby? Where is the portrait of the Varsity Scout Coach trying to get a team to

stop arguing over the officiating of an intersquad basketball game? Where is the image of the Venturing crew Advisor attempting to sort out the differences between several crew members on the first day of a two-week adventure? What about the district committee member confronted with a seemingly unresolvable argument between others on the committee?

Leadership is easy when everything is going well—or when everybody is sound asleep. Much of the rest of the time, leadership involves managing conflict by finding common ground among individuals, providing tools for people to settle their own disputes, and on rare occasions stepping in to make unilateral decisions.

Opening Exercise

Let’s begin our exploration of conflict management with this exercise.

Get with a partner. One of you makes a fist. The other has two minutes to convince the first to open that fist.

(Give participants a couple of minutes to do this.)

What happened? Did anyone manage to convince the other to open the fist? Whether successful or not, what strategies did you try?

POSSIBLE STRATEGIES

• Bribery—”I’ll give you five dollars if you open your fist.”

• Concern—”It doesn’t matter to me if you open your fist, but unless you do you won’t be able to pick anything up.”

• Persuasion—”I like your hands better open than closed.”

• Interest—”I’m curious to see what’s inside your fist.”

• Straightforwardness—”Hey, open your fist!”

The point of this exercise is to remind us that we can’t make people do anything they don’t want to do. If you ask a Scout, or a coworker, or a family member, or an adult colleague in Scouting to do something and they refuse, you can’t force them to do it. There must be boundaries and rules, of course, and we’ll talk about that in a moment, but the bottom line is you can’t coerce someone to do something.

Think about one of the most basic conflict situations—between a parent and a child. How do you convince a child of 5 or 6 that it is time to put away the toys and take a bath?

In that situation, many of us use all sorts of rewards—you can read a book after your bath, you can bring one toy into the tub, you can fire up the massage jets, etc. But if that doesn’t work, then what? What if the child digs in and absolutely refuses to obey? Often that’s when we punish: Time out. Take away a toy. It is a “power over” situation. The same sort of situation often occurs with a boss and an employee. It can occur with a leader and a Scout.

Ultimately, you can only empower yourself. Then, within boundaries, you can encourage others to act in certain ways.

Be Aware of Yourself

The first thing to do in any relationship, but especially one that may involve conflict, is to look at yourself. Why is the issue at hand important to you? In the great

A Scoutmaster found himself nagging his Scouts on every campout to get busy with evening meal preparation so that they could eat supper at a reasonable hour. After this happened three or four times, he asked himself what was really at stake. When he was honest about it, he realized that he wanted the meal on time because he was hungry then and eating late made him grumpy. On the next campout he took along a sandwich and a couple of granola bars but kept them hidden from the Scouts. He said nothing to the Scouts as the afternoon lengthened into evening, but when he felt himself getting hungry he walked a short distance from camp and had a snack. The Scouts procrastinated a little longer, but eventually they got hungry, too, and in their own good time they prepared their meal and invited him to dine with them.

What the Scoutmaster had stumbled upon was the self-resolving conflict—a situation that, if given time, will work itself out without confrontation or argument. The Scoutmaster realized that he was attempting to impose his schedule on a group that was in favor of the ultimate outcome but resisted the time frame. When the Scoutmaster understood the larger picture and took steps to alter his role in it, the problem went away.

Be Aware of Others

When are people most likely to do what you ask them to do, especially if it is something they are less than excited about?

• When they trust you

• When they have experience with you and have found you to be a reliable leader and ally

• When they understand that you are making decisions for the good of the group

• Most of all, when they sense that you care about them

Early in this Wood Badge course, we discussed the importance of Listening to Learn. Listening is the most important skill in resolving any conflict, whether the conflict involves you as a participant or as a moderator. Unless you make a conscious effort to listen, you will miss vital facts and beliefs that could lead to a satisfactory resolution.

Consider this story:

A woman gets on an airliner. She is tired after a long business trip and just wants to get home. She has a window seat. A large man who is sitting by the aisle will not get up to let her reach her window seat. She struggles to get past him and sits down very put out. But she wants to be polite. “Where are you going?” she asks the man.

He doesn’t look at her, but in a gruff voice says, “Farther than you, so don’t think I’m going to get up when you get off.”

She feels herself become angry, but takes a deep breath and decides to get more information. She continues to press the man to talk to her, and discovers that he is just recovering from an automobile accident and that it is very difficult for him to get up and down from a seat. It frustrates him, and he is fearful about whether he will ever fully recover.

The reality of that situation changed how the woman thought of the man’s actions. They did not become best friends, but she realized how her first impressions of him had been wrong and that only through careful listening was she able to understand what was really going on.

Set the Scene for Cooperative Resolutions

Listening to people and paying attention to them is an essential step for establishing a relationship in which cooperation can occur.

Think back to the Who-Me Game we did earlier in this course. Think of how you and others in your patrol have shared information about yourselves with one another. Remember the experiences you have shared in the last few days. Those are all points of contact, connections that provide a foundation of trust, understanding, and familiarity for further communication and, if necessary, for resolving conflicts.

In real estate, the rule is “Location, location, location!” In leadership, and especially when dealing with conflict, the bottom line is “Involvement, involvement, involvement!”

As a leader, the more you have shared with those you lead, the greater your chances of finding cooperative resolutions for conflicts. Developing that kind of connection cannot happen overnight, though. It is one of the ongoing challenges and rewards of good leadership.

The Most Important Question

Whenever you work with people, the most important question to ask them is, “What do you want?”

Think about that. When was the last time somebody asked you that? When was the last time somebody really listened to your answer?

For example, as a presenter I really want this presentation to go well. But if it isn’t going well, then what? What can I do? I can lash out at you, demand that you pay attention. I can start crying. I can plead with you to cheer me on. I can just run away and leave all of you behind. Or, I might even be so bold as to ask all of you for suggestions about how this could go better.

So the first question in working with someone is: “What do you want?”

The Most Important Follow-Up Questions

Once you’ve gotten the answer to “What do you want?” there are three

follow-up questions.

• “What are you willing to do to get what you want?”

• “Is what you are doing working?”

• “Do you want to figure out another way?”

Questions for Conflict Resolution

1. What do you want?

2. What are you doing to get it?

3. Is it working?

4. Do you want to figure out another way?

Think about the power of these questions when asked in this order. The first one focuses people’s attention on what their real needs are and helps you see more clearly other people’s points of view. The subsequent questions put responsibility on other people to be a party in examining where they are and then in finding pathways to reach where they want to be.

Questions 2 and 3 are vital. Don’t skip them. They are questions that empower people. Give people the time and encouragement to figure out the answers, to understand their own path.

Too often we as leaders skip questions 2 and 3. We ask, “What do you want?” and then jump immediately to a variation of question 4, telling someone what we think they should do.

Questions 2 and 3 help people figure things out on their own and discover their own path. Question 4 gives them a way to invite you to help them explore other approaches to a problem. It encourages a cooperative effort—working together to help everyone get what they want.

Remember, you can’t control another person—you can’t open the fist of a person who refuses to open it. But you can persuade. You can join forces with him or her in a mutual search. You can encourage him or her to become an active seeker after meaningful answers.

Effective Communication in Conflict Situations

In the Wood Badge session on Communication, we talked about the fact that there is much more to conveying a message than simply repeating the words. Body language sends powerful messages, as does tone of voice.

For example, I can ask the most important question in four different ways and convey at least four different messages about my attitude and my willingness to work together toward a solution.

Professional conflict mediators are trained to manage their emotions so that they can be as objective as possible. That allows them to view a situation for what it is rather than to allow their anger or excitement or some other emotion to dictate their reactions.

Most of us here haven’t had that kind of in-depth training. However, simply being aware of the need to step away from our emotional responses can help us react more effectively when a situation involves conflict.

One trick is to pay attention to your breathing for a few moments. When we are under stress, we often take rapid, shallow breaths. A few slow, deep breaths can refresh your brain with oxygen and help you focus more clearly.

If anger or frustration or some other emotion is clouding your ability to see an issue as objectively as possible, it’s probably wise to step back for a minute or an hour, or even a day or more. Allow time to collect yourself before going forward. Remember the parenting trick of counting to 10 before reacting to a child’s confrontational actions? The same principle holds true when you are engaged in difficult interactions with teenagers or adults.

Work on issues in the present and the future, not in the past. Rather than looking for blame and recrimination, steer conversations toward seeking solutions.

Any time you feel that you aren’t making progress or that you don’t know what to do next, return to the basic four questions.

1. What do you want?

2. What are you doing to get what you want?

3. Is it working?

4. Do you want to figure out another way?

Negotiating Limits and Rules

Are you law-abiding? (Most people will say yes.)

When the freeway speed limit says 55 mph, do you drive 60? If so, why?

If a meeting is set to start at 8 A.M., do you arrive at 8:05? Is that OK? Are you still law-abiding?

Scenario 1

Here’s a situation many of you have probably experienced firsthand. The parents of a 16-year-old son set his Saturday night curfew at midnight. The first week, he comes in at 12:05. Is that OK? The parents trust him and they are so glad that he is home safe that they accept the late arrival and say nothing about it.

The next Saturday, he comes in at 12:15. The parents are again relieved that he is home and safe, and so again they say nothing.

The next week, he comes in at 12:30, and the parents freak out. They give him their very best lecture about trust and responsibility. The boy’s eyes glaze over as he listens.

What time will he come in next? Probably about 12:20. He splits the difference between what he understood was OK and what he knows is not. 12:15 was OK, 12:30 was not, so the real curfew time (originally set at midnight) must actually be somewhere around 12:20.

What’s the lesson here? If there are limits that you as a leader expect group members to respect, you need to be clear about what those boundaries are and then stick to them. One of the best methods of doing that is to involve the group in determining those limits. You can use the four basic questions of conflict resolution to establish standards that may deter conflict from occurring. What do you, as a leader, want? What does your group want? Where is there common ground for agreement? What are the factors that may prove nonnegotiable?

Scenario 2

Here’s another scenario. On a Scout hike, three or four of the older Scouts speed ahead of the rest of the group. When they get tired, they stop and wait for the others to catch up, but as soon as the others do, the older Scouts take off again. To make the scenario more interesting, let’s have the Scouts hiking in grizzly bear country.

Are there reasons why this should concern you, the leader?

• There’s a safety issue. If someone becomes injured or lost or happens upon a bear, the group is split up and will be less able to cope with the situation.

• Dividing the group like this can damage group morale and team building.

• Dividing the group makes it more difficult for adult leaders to provide appropriate leadership.

You gather the older Scouts to discuss the situation and try to find an acceptable solution. In resolving this conflict, you can begin by encouraging a cooperative approach. If that fails, then you can use another leadership tool— the proscriptive approach.

A Cooperative Approach

The ideal approach to a conflict is to engage everyone on an equal basis and help them come up with a solution on their own. We’ve already seen how this can work by asking the four questions:

1. What do you want?

2. What are you doing to get what you want?

3. Is it working?

4. Do you want to figure out another way?

You may discover that the older boys are eager for some time alone. Stronger than the others, the older boys may want to hike fast for the sake of hiking fast.

When the older boys hear you answer the same four questions, they may discover the importance of staying together for safety, for effective leadership, and for group morale.

Given the chance to figure out ways to resolve these differing needs, the older boys may have some good ideas. Perhaps for the duration of this hike they will stay with the rest of the group and be supportive of the younger Scouts. At a future date, you will help them organize an older Scout hike, or perhaps even see about organizing a Varsity Scout squad or Venture patrol in the troop.

A Proscriptive Approach

Sometimes cooperation fails. The older Scouts of the group hiking in bear country continue to split off from the others, jeopardizing the safety of themselves and the rest of the group.

Leaders sometimes must make the decision that certain behavior will not be tolerated. Perhaps the most dramatic instances are when safety is being compromised and someone must take action immediately.

“Stop swinging that axe right now, and I mean right now!” Once the axe is out of the Scout’s hands, you can begin discussing the dangers of chopping while barefooted.

Within the context of making such decisions—that is, proscribing behavior and then demanding that it happen that way—it is still possible to act in a manner that is effective for you and understandable to those you are leading.

Rather than four questions, proscriptive conflict resolution is built on four statements:

1. This is what I want.

2. This is what I understand you are doing.

3. This is why that isn’t working for me.

4. Here’s what I need for you to do.

While the end result is an immediate change in behavior, this approach gives leaders tools to explain themselves and provide a basis for a decision. It allows a leader and group members to interact on a healthy level, and it provides the opportunity for proscriptive decisions to evolve into arrangements developed through a more cooperative approach.

As with any sort of leadership, being able to step in, if necessary, and set certain boundaries is easier to do if leaders have already established a relationship of trust and understanding with those they are leading. Leaders who have taken the time to listen and learn and care for people in their groups will have a much easier time negotiating with group members and individuals to establish the needs and solutions of everyone, leaders included.

You can be open with people in your group about your understanding of your responsibilities and what you expect from them. At its most basic, the contract between leaders and those who are led is as follows.

Ideas we don’t share often enough with others include these:

• “If I’m doing something that bothers you, I’d like you to tell me in a respectful way.”

• “How will it be if we really get along? What will that be like?”

• “If I see you’re having a problem, what do you want me to do?”

Conclusion

Return to the fist exercise. The right words will open it, but it takes awareness and understanding to discover what those words are. It is well worth the time and the effort—an open hand is far better than a fist.

Now ask each pair of participants to open their fists and shake hands with one another. That’s the ultimate goal of conflict resolution—to build on common ground, to listen, to find solutions to situations that allow us to grow closer to one another rather than farther apart.
